Dennis Van Kampen

Dennis Van Kampen is President and CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries, a faith-based organization founded in 1900 that serves people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Grand Rapids. Under his leadership, the ministry has built an integrated model combining shelter, mental health support, workforce development, and spiritual care, rejecting simple either/or solutions in favor of programming tailored to each person's circumstances.

Van Kampen describes his leadership style as similar to conducting an orchestra: deliberately building a team of talented people and giving them the space to drive the organization forward, while he keeps his own focus on the ministry's direction over decades rather than day-to-day operations. A recurring theme in his work is that broken relationships, not just financial hardship, are often what push people into homelessness, which makes relationship-building central to how the ministry helps people move toward stability.

He has positioned Mel Trotter Ministries as an organization that is explicitly faith-based while still serving everyone regardless of background, gender identity, or religious belief. More recently, the ministry has been redesigning its shelter facilities and shifting more resources toward supporting people who are already housed, reflecting Van Kampen's view that people fare better once they have a home.
