Allen Monroe is President and CEO of The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, where he has led an effort to transform the institution from a traditional zoo into a global conservation organization. Under a Master Plan he has driven since taking the role, the organization now focuses heavily on protecting endangered species across multiple continents.
During his tenure, Monroe has helped build an endowment exceeding $50 million and expanded the organization's conservation work to 35 projects across 10 countries, carried out in partnership with 57 governmental and international organizations. He favors community-based conservation, particularly in Africa, treating local populations as active partners in environmental stewardship rather than outside observers of conservation decisions made elsewhere.
His approach combines technology, careful financial management, and educational programming, framed around what he sees as an urgent global biodiversity crisis.
